Broadband in Finspång Municipality
On this page you will find an overview of how broadband and fibre connections work in Finspång Municipality. You can read about the difference between a connection and a subscription, what an open network means, and what usually differs between apartments and houses. The page also includes a short guide on how to get started, as well as links to further information and relevant providers.
What is broadband?
Broadband allows you to send and receive large amounts of data, for example for work, streaming and other online services. Fibre, which is a fixed type of broadband, usually provides higher and more stable speeds than other solutions such as mobile broadband. Fibre is delivered through a dedicated cable that is buried in the ground and connected directly to your home, while mobile broadband is wireless and shared between many users.
Important distinction: connection and subscription
It is important to distinguish between two things.
Connection (infrastructure)
This refers to whether your home or property has a physical connection to a fibre network or city network, or whether it can be connected. The connection cost is a one-time fee.
Subscription (service)
This refers to the broadband service you choose from a provider, for example an internet connection or TV channels. The subscription is paid monthly and covers the service itself, including the agreement you sign with the provider, such as speed, price and terms.
This distinction is especially important in open networks, where the network infrastructure and the broadband service may be provided by different actors. In these cases, you as a customer can choose between several service providers. It can be compared to a road network. The connection is the road itself, while the subscription is the vehicle that allows you to travel on it.
What is an open network?
In Finspång there is a municipal fibre network that operates as an open network. This means that the infrastructure is built so that you as a customer can usually choose between several service providers, depending on which ones are available at your address, instead of being limited to a single provider.
City network and other providers
Finspång Municipality owns a municipal company, Finspångs Stadsnät Finet AB, which is responsible for expanding the city network in Finspång. The city network is an open network, which means that you as a customer have the opportunity to choose the service provider that suits you best. More information about the city network is available from Finet.
There are also other providers offering broadband connections in Finspång. To get an overview of which providers have fibre networks in a specific area or nearby, you can use the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) service Broadband Map. This service includes maps that help you identify network owners and internet providers near a particular address.
How to get broadband in brief
- Find out which broadband options are available at your address. You can contact providers directly or use the Broadband Map from the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) to see available options.
- If your address is connected to an open fibre network, you can choose a service provider and sign a subscription agreement. This includes details such as speed, price and terms.
- If your address does not have a fibre connection, you need to contact a provider that offers fibre connections in the area to see whether and how your home can be connected. Once the address is connected, you can sign a subscription. Otherwise, you can choose a mobile broadband subscription.
- When the subscription is active, you connect the equipment in your home, such as a router.
Apartment or house
Apartment: In many cases, the building already has a fibre connection. In that situation you mainly need to choose a service provider and sign a subscription with a provider available at your address.
House: A house may already be connected, or a new connection may be required. Conditions and possible connection costs may vary depending on the area and the property.
For both apartments and houses, the available options are always determined by your address.
Access to broadband in numbers
Finspång Municipality aims to ensure that residents have access to IT infrastructure with high data speeds. According to the municipal strategy:
- 98 percent have access to at least 1 Gbit/s
- 1.9 percent have access to at least 100 Mbit/s
- 0.1 percent have access to at least 30 Mbit/s
Note that these figures describe availability at the infrastructure level. The availability for a specific home depends on the address and local conditions.
