Swedish for Immigrants
(SFI)
Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) is the first step in learning Swedish for those who have moved to Sweden. You will learn to speak, read and write in Swedish, and gain knowledge about Swedish society. After completing the course, you will receive a grade or a certificate showing the goals you have achieved.
Starting from July 1 in the year you turn 16, you are eligible to begin SFI. There is no upper age limit for studying. You must be a resident of Sweden and lack the basic knowledge of the Swedish language that the education provides. You can apply for SFI at any time during the year. SFI education is free of charge.
As of January 1, 2026, new rules apply to SFI, which mean that you may study SFI for a maximum of three years. This period is counted from the first day you begin your studies.
Example: If you start on January 1, 2026, you may study SFI until January 1, 2029. The time continues to count even if you are ill, working, or studying part-time or in a flexible format.
If there are special reasons due to your personal circumstances, the municipality may decide to grant you an extension. Each case is assessed individually.
After we have received your application, you will be invited to a placement interview at the school. Bring valid identification and any previous certificates or grades to the meeting.
You can combine SFI studies with other education, work, or an internship. SFI classes are offered during the daytime for 15 hours per week. If you are a guardian of a child who is at least 1 year old, your child is entitled to preschool for the hours you are working or studying. Your work, study, and travel time form the basis for the child’s attendance.
There are three different study tracks and four courses in SFI. Your Swedish skills and educational background determine which course you will start in:
- Track 1: Courses A, B, C, and D – for those with little or no formal education.
- Track 2: Courses B, C, and D – for those with a longer educational background.
- Track 3: Courses C and D – for those who are very familiar with studying, want to study quickly, and work independently.
After passing Course D in SFI, you can continue with basic Swedish as a second language.
When you begin your SFI studies, you and your teacher will create an individual study plan describing your goals and learning path. The plan is updated regularly.
