District heating is a system that supplies buildings with heat through a centralised network. Instead of each property having its own heating system, hot water is produced at a central plant and distributed through insulated pipes to connected buildings. The heat is then used for space heating and domestic hot water.

In Finspång, district heating is provided by the municipally owned company Finspångs Tekniska. The system is based on efficient large-scale heat production using a range of energy sources, such as recovered energy, biofuels and other locally available fuels. This provides a more resource-efficient and environmentally sustainable heating solution than individual heating systems.

To connect a property to the district heating network, the property owner must apply for a connection. The process usually includes:

• An assessment of whether the property is located within the existing network area
• A connection offer and agreement
• Installation of a district heating substation in the building

The district heating substation transfers heat from the district heating network to the building’s internal heating and hot water systems without mixing the water from the two systems.

District heating is a reliable and low-maintenance heating solution, as the operation and maintenance of the production and distribution system are managed by the supplier.

The cost normally consists of a connection fee and ongoing charges based on energy consumption and heating demand.
