In Sweden, elections are held for the national parliament (Riksdag), municipal councils, and regional councils every four years, and for the European Parliament every five years.

Right to vote in municipal and regional elections

You are eligible to vote in municipal and regional elections if you:

• Turn 18 years of age no later than on election day, and
• Are registered in the municipality/region and are a citizen of Sweden, another EU country, Iceland, or Norway, or
• Are a citizen of another country and have been registered in Sweden for a continuous period of three years prior to election day.

Right to vote in national parliamentary elections

You are eligible to vote in national elections (Riksdag) if you:

• Turn 18 years of age no later than on election day, and
• Are a Swedish citizen and are, or have been, registered as a resident in Sweden.

Right to vote in European Parliament elections

You are eligible to vote in European Parliament elections if you:

• Are a Swedish citizen and are, or have been, registered as a resident in Sweden, or
• Are a citizen of an EU member state, are registered in Sweden, and have submitted an application to be included in the electoral register.

Swedish Election Authority (Valmyndigheten)

The Swedish Election Authority is the central government agency responsible for coordinating the planning, organization and execution of all elections in Sweden. It handles election preparations, compiles electoral rolls, issues voting cards and more.

Election Committee (Valnämnden)
