Age limits for cinema films

Films screened in cinemas in Sweden may have an age limit of permitted for all ages, 7, 11, or 15 years. These age limits are regulated by law (2010:1882) and set by the Swedish Media Council (Statens Medieråd).

  • 15 years: You may watch the film without adult supervision if you are 15 years old and can prove it when entering the cinema. From the age of 11, a person may watch a film with a 15-year age limit if accompanied by an adult. An adult is defined as someone who is at least 18 years old and legally responsible. A 15-year age limit indicates that the film is considered potentially harmful to those under 15, even if accompanied. The adult accompanying the child is responsible for the child’s well-being.
  • 11 years: You must be at least 11 years old to watch the film without adult supervision. With an adult, the film may be viewed from age 7.
  • 7 years: You must be at least 7 years old to watch the film without an adult. With adult supervision, the film is permitted for all ages.
  • Permitted for all ages (Barntillåten): Suitable for everyone, regardless of age.
  • Not yet reviewed (Ej granskad): No age limit has been set yet because the film has not been reviewed by the Swedish Media Council. The age limit will be updated as soon as it has been determined.
