Special Needs School

Adapted education in Finspång Municipality includes schooling and support for children, young people, and adults with intellectual disabilities or acquired brain injuries. The municipality offers adapted compulsory school, adapted upper secondary school, and adult education, all tailored to meet the needs and abilities of each individual.

Special Needs Compulsory School (Anpassad grundskola)

The special needs compulsory school is for pupils in school years 1–9 who have an intellectual disability or an acquired brain injury. The school is located at Nyhemsskolan in central Finspång.

To determine whether a pupil qualifies for the special needs school, the home municipality conducts an assessment that includes four parts: a pedagogical, psychological, medical and social evaluation.

Pupils follow the curriculum for the special needs compulsory school and can study subjects, subject areas, or a combination of both. Subject areas are used when pupils are not expected to meet the assessment criteria for individual subjects.

A pupil who qualifies for the special needs school may also attend a mainstream class and receive all or part of their education based on the special needs curriculum. The decision on such integration is made by the school authority. For the integration to be approved, the involved school authorities must agree, and the pupil’s guardian must give their consent.

If you have recently moved to Finspång Municipality, you apply for school placement for your child using a paper form.

Special Needs Upper Secondary School (Anpassad gymnasieskola)

The special needs upper secondary school is intended for young people aged 16–20 who have an intellectual disability or an acquired brain injury. It is a four-year education provided at Bergska gymnasiet in Finspång.

The pupil’s home municipality is responsible for deciding whether the pupil qualifies for this type of education. This is based on an assessment that includes pedagogical, psychological, medical and social evaluations.

The special needs upper secondary school offers both national and individual programmes. After completing their education, students receive a certificate of completion.

The national programmes are vocational and include subject-based education.

The individual programmes are designed for students who are not expected to meet the criteria for national programmes. These programmes focus on broader subject areas. If the student is motivated and able, it is also possible to combine subject areas with courses from the national special needs programmes.

To apply for the special needs upper secondary school, you need to submit a paper application form if you have not received login credentials for the online application portal.
