Compulsory School and After-School Care

In Finspång Municipality, there are several municipal primary schools and one independent school. All primary schools also offer after-school care. Many of the schools are located in central Finspång, while others are in smaller communities in the countryside.

If you are newly moved to Finspång Municipality, you apply for a school placement for your child via an e-service on the municipality's website, or by paper form if you do not have an e-ID.

The e-service and the application form are available in Swedish.

Preschool class

Preschool class is the first stage of compulsory school and begins in the autumn of the year your child turns 6. It is a mandatory and free form of education.

There is close collaboration between preschools and preschool classes to ensure a smooth and natural transition for your child. After one year in preschool class, the child continues to Year 1 of primary school.

Primary School

Primary school is compulsory in Sweden, and children attend from the age of 7 to 16 (Years 1–9).

Leisure-Time Centre (Fritidshem)

Leisure-time centres are part of the Swedish school system and provide pedagogical care for children aged 6 to 13 before and after school, as well as during school holidays. These centres are usually located near preschools and primary schools. The time a child spends at a leisure-time centre depends on the guardian’s working hours or studies.

Once you apply for a place, you will be offered one as soon as possible. If there is availability, your child will be placed in the area of your preference. Unless otherwise agreed with the school principal, the placement is for a minimum of one month.

If you are working or studying, you can apply for a place via an e-service on the municipality’s website, or use a paper form if you do not have access to Swedish e-identification.

The e-service and the application form are available in Swedish.

School choice

for preschool class and grade 7

According to the Swedish Education Act, a child has the right to a school placement at the school preferred by the legal guardian. To make a school choice, the child must be registered in Finspång Municipality. As a guardian, you choose a school for your child before they start preschool class and again before they begin grade 7.

You apply via an e-service on the municipality’s website. The e-service is open for school choice during the month of January. If you do not have access to BankID, please contact Finspång Municipality.

The e-service and the application form are available in Swedish.

Student Health Services

Student health services are led by the school principal and focus primarily on preventive and health-promoting work. Their aim is to support students in reaching the educational goals.

The student health team includes several professional roles working together to support students’ development, learning, and well-being. Each school has a student health team consisting of a principal, special needs educator/special education teacher, school nurse, school counsellor, and study and career counsellor.

At the central level, there are also specialists such as special needs educators, psychologists, and school physicians. The student health work at each school is carried out in collaboration with the central student support services.

Mother Tongue Instruction

Mother tongue instruction gives students with a native language other than Swedish the opportunity to study their mother tongue as a subject in compulsory school.

Instruction is provided if at least five students apply and may take place at a different school than the one the student attends.

You apply for mother tongue instruction through an e-service on the municipality’s website. If you are unable to use the e-service, contact your child’s school to receive a paper application form.

The e-service and the application form are available in Swedish.

Compulsory schooling, attendance and leave

Compulsory schooling begins the year the child turns 6 and starts in the preschool class. It usually ends at the end of the spring term of the ninth school year, or the tenth year if the student attends a special needs school. In certain cases, compulsory schooling can be postponed until the year the child turns 7.

Compulsory schooling includes both the obligation to attend school and the extensive right to education.

Reporting absence to school

If a student cannot participate in school activities due to illness or other reasons, this must be reported to the school as soon as possible.

End of compulsory schooling

If a student has not completed the final school year when compulsory schooling would otherwise end, the municipality of residence may consider extending the obligation in applicable cases.

Compulsory schooling does not apply if the child’s circumstances are such that it is clearly unreasonable to require the child to attend school according to the Education Act.

If a family permanently moves abroad and is no longer registered as residents in Sweden, compulsory schooling ceases.

Compulsory schooling also ends if the child is still registered in Sweden but is considered by the municipality to be living abroad on a long-term basis.

When compulsory schooling ends due to long-term residence abroad, the municipality’s responsibility for financing the child’s education also ends. The responsibility for ensuring school attendance is shared between the guardian, the municipality of residence and the school provider.

School transport

Finspång Municipality provides free school transport for students in compulsory school, special compulsory school and special upper secondary school to the nearest school, provided the distance criteria are met. If the student chooses an alternative school through school choice, transport may not be granted.

Who is eligible for school transport?

School transport is arranged within Finspång Municipality for students from the preschool class up to Year 9. Eligibility is assessed based on the distance between home and school, traffic conditions, any disabilities or other relevant factors.

Before each school year, the municipality reviews which students are entitled to school transport based on their registered address and assigned school. Students are automatically granted school transport if the distance between home and school exceeds:

  • 3 km for students in the preschool class to Year 3
  • 4 km for students in Years 4–6
  • 5 km for students in Years 7–9
